Trams

There is an excellent tram system in Sofia, if somewhat crowded at time. For 0.5lv you can take a single journey of any length. The tram systems covers large portions of the city with regular stops.

You purchase your ticket at a billeterie near most main tram stops. When you board the tram you must use the small punch machines to impress your ticket. Inspectors travel inconspicuosly Often wear overcoats as 'disguise' until after they are on tram and it is moving. They can ask to check your ticket - without one and you will be fined on the spot 5 leva. There is no point arguing, just pay up and put it down to experience!

There are likely to be gypsy pick-pockets on busy trams. The locals will be on the look-out so don't be suprised if a whisper suddenly starts if someone 'suspicious' gets on.

If you are unable to get a ticket before the journey (the booths are not open past 7pm), then ask the driver - but have the correct fare ready.
